24 Sep 2016 – The Lynfield College Gold Mixed team of Esther Tomkinson, Aldi Ting, Niamh Masterton and Tanmay Arora backed up their 2015 title with a 7-1 win in the Auckland Schools Mixed final at Paradice Avondale last week.
The team had had a variable season, winning only half of their pool matches, but were too strong in the final for promising 2016 newcomers Long Bay College Alpha.
A second title went Lynfield's way when Lynfield Grey (Stefan Mathews, Tameem Saeid, Jacob Penny, Alan Chen) had a last-stone 6-5 final win against the only other Boys' team Birkenhead College, who started as favourites after a strong season. A score of 4 in the third end, and then a quadruple takeout to blank the sixth end were stand-out moments for the Lynfield squad.
The Girls' competition was by far the largest and the tightest in the 2016 Auckland Schools season, with 11 teams entered. Both of the previous week's semi-finals were close matches, Lynfield Green beating St Dominics 8-7 and Epsom Girls Azalea getting home 6-5 against Birkenhead.
The final followed in the same vein. The scores were locked at 4-4 with the session almost out of time before EGGS Azalea scored two in a rushed last end for a 6-4 victory, earning the title for Toshiko Frederiksens, Renee Zhang, Shreya Raniga and Sanchita Vyas.
Birkenhead College Girls beat St Dominics 8-2 for third place.
The shield for the best novice team went to Girls runners-up Lynfield Green, ahead of Mixed runners-up Long Bay Alpha.
