11 Jul 2017 – Both the Men's and Women's finals came down to the wire at the weekend's 2017 New Zealand Curling Championships, both games being decided with the final stone.
Although Team Sean Becker went undefeated through the round robin to be top qualifier, they found themselves trailing early in the gold medal match after Peter de Boer stole the first two ends.
Becker got back into the match with a 3 in the third, but de Boer led 4-3 at the fourth end break.
Coming into the final end trailing by 2 points, Becker held last stone advantage. With just his hammer stone left to play Becker had 5 stones in the house. de Boer held the crucial second shot, reasonably well guarded but with just an edge visible.
Becker's last stone was tight on a guard and it needed frantic sweeping by Warren Dobson and Hamish Walker, urged on by third Scott Becker, to squeeze past the guard and pick out the de Boer stone, score 5 and take the win 9-6.
Peter de Boer, Brett Sargon, Warren Kearney and Phil Dowling had to be content with silver.
Top qualifiers Chelsea Farley, Thivya Jeyaranjan, Tessa Farley and Eleanor Adviento led the Women's gold medal match 4-1 after five ends. Bridget Becker and her side of Jessica Smith, Holly Thompson and Emma Sutherland then initiated a fightback, scoring a deuce in the sixth end followed by a steal in the seventh to tie the scores coming home.
An attempted nose hit for the win with the hammer stone in the last end overcurled for Team Farley, the sweepers unable to bring it back. So Becker stole a second successive end for a 5-4 win and the title.
The Men's bronze medal went to Kieran Ford, Ian Ford, Robert Giles and Jonah Tan. With only three teams entered in the Women's championship, no bronze was awarded.
