20 Sep 2024 – Maniototo Area School won six from six to claim gold at last weekend's 2024 South Island Secondary Schools championship.
Seven teams lined up for Friday evening's opening games of the partial round robin, with four semi-final places available.
Maniototo were assured of a semi spot with a game to play and Otago Boys Blue finished a clear second, dropping just one game.
Bayfield Burlers, Logan Park High and Columba College Doves all finished with a 2-2 win-loss record, and had a win and a loss against each other in a three-way countback. Rankings were decided by each team's draw shot record, and Columba Doves were the unlucky side to miss out.
Maniototo and Otago Boys went on to the final with semi-final wins against Logan Park and Bayfield respectively.
The Maniototo side of Olivia Russell, Jack Steele, Jonty Russell, Indianna Hepi and Mahaliya Pike looked to be cruising to victory, ahead 6-0 halfway through the eight-end final. But a great fightback by their Otago Boys opponents saw that lead cut back to one as the teams headed into the last end. Maniototo held their nerve to take a single point with the last stone and claim the title 7-5.
Bayfield Burlers comfortably won the bronze medal ahead of Logan Park.
