|Auckland Mixed Doubles champions for 2019, Garion and Rebecca Long|
10 Oct 2019 – Garion and Rebecca Long won a short and sharp 2019 Auckland Mixed Doubles Championship at Paradice Avondale last Sunday.
With the reality of ice hire costs making a traditional round-robin format unviable, the 8 teams competing started the evening with a random draw to find their opponents for the three preliminary four-end games.
After the preliminary rounds the Longs had a perfect 3-from-3 record, as did Sasha Goloborodko and Nikita Derevianko, so it was these sides who met in the final.
Three points to Sasha and Nikita in the second end gave them an early lead, but the Longs came back to tie the game into the final end. They set themselves up well for the steal, and held a well-guarded shot with just their opponent's final stone to come.
The last stone of the game was a little light and clipped a guard, giving Rebecca and Garion Long a 4-3 victory and their first Auckland Mixed Doubles title.
The playoff for third and fourth was a repeat of the first-round encounter between Kate Smirnova / Brett Sargon and Jo Olszewski / Lorne DePape. Smirnova and Sargon won the decider 4-2.
