8 Sep 2016 – Auckland’s Birkenhead College scooped the Boys, Girls and Mixed titles at the recent 2016 North Island Secondary Schools Curling Championships.

The event was held during Winter Tournament Week (29 August - 1 September) at Paradice Avondale.

The Mixed competition was a best-of-three series between Birkenhead and Long Bay College. Birkenhead stole two in the final end of the first game to win 8-6, and had a more comfortable 7-3 victory in the next to secure the series 2-0.

Epsom Girls Grammar’s Team Brianna finished top of the Girls pool standings, stealing three in the last end to head off the Birkenhead side in the Round Robin games. The result was reversed in the final as Birkenhead stole four successive singles in the middle of the match on their way to take the gold medal 5-3.

Birkenhead College Boys were unchallenged in their section.
