8 Jun 2016 – The "Maroon Four" team of Brett Sargon (skip), Eleanor Adviento (vice), Kieran Ford (2nd) and Thivya Jeyaranjan (lead) were comprehensive winners of the 2016 New Zealand Mixed Curling Championship.

They finished the Queen's Birthday weekend tournament at Paradice Avondale with a perfect 5-0 record.

The six teams entered played in two crossover pools of three, with all teams in one pool playing the sides in the other.

Sargon's Maroon Four and Liz Matthews' team topped Pool A, with both sides winning all 3 matches against their Pool B opponents. Peter de Boer and Garion Long recorded a win apiece in Pool B to qualify for semi-finals.

In the pool games, Peter de Boer made a valiant effort to make up a 7 point deficit in the last two ends against Liz Matthews. His side took three with hammer in the penultimate end, and with his last stone in the final end he made the shot of the weekend with a spectacular angle raised double to sit with the four points needed to tie.

However the experienced Matthews held her nerve to tap back one of de Boer's stones to secure the win for her team.

Monday morning's semi-finals saw the top two teams in each pool pitted against each other, and both were one-sided affairs that finished early. Sargon beat Matthews 13-1, while de Boer accounted for Long 10-1.

The second and fifth ends were crucial in the final. In the second, de Boer had a short but difficult double run-back for six. However his final stone hit the wrong side of the front rock meaning that Sargon's side escaped, conceding just one. Sargon capitalised on his opportunity in the sixth though, taking five to make the game safe. The teams shook hands in the last end with the score 8-4.

The bronze medal game went to an extra end after Matthews stole two in the last end to level the scores, but Long won the match 7-6 after a measure in the next end. Chelsea Farley's side finally hit their straps in the 5th/6th playoff, shutting out Robert Giles 10-0 to reverse the result of their pool game.
