2012 Bonspiel

19 Jul 2014 – A mild winter means prospects of a National Bonspiel this season are not looking too promising, despite the current cold spell.

NZCA Executive member Ken Gillespie had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek though when he spoke to the Otago Daily Times' Lynda van Kempen about the potential for curling on Oturehua's Idaburn Dam any time soon.

24 May 2014 – The May World Curling Federation newsletter from President Kate Caithness covers World Curling's news, tournament, progress and updates from the last few months.

The newsletter also features New Zealand's recent WCF Olympic Celebration Tour featuring Cheryl Bernard and Terry Meek, and a round-up of post-Olympic activities from other countries.

Cheryl Bernard

16 Mar 2014 – Auckland, Dunedin and Maniototo Curling ran a series of well-attended clinics in early March, hosted by 2010 Canadian skip Cheryl Bernard and her husband Terry Meek. Cheryl and her team won Olympic silver in Vancouver four years ago, while Terry is a leading coach and 2009 World Men's gold medallist.

The various sessions for club and media, public and schools were a part of the World Curling Federation's Olympic Celebration Tour. Very enthusiastic current and potential curlers attended, the latter enjoying a wonderful introduction to our sport.

Auckland Curling's Facebook page has plenty of pictures from the three sessions there.

2013 MCI camp

17 Jul 2013 – The July Junior camp at Naseby's MCI rink was deemed both enjoyable and successful by both the coaches and athletes involved. Over 30 junior curlers attended, thanks to a late influx of applications from Dunedin.

Skills and ages ranged from a couple of very enthusiastic 10 year olds (whose understanding belied their years) to more seasoned Under-21 international players.

Gone Curling

5 Dec 2012 – Rachael Patching and Roland Kahurangi, producers of the acclaimed New Zealand short film Gone Curling, are keen to thank their supporters and update all on their film's successes.

"We wanted to touch base and let you know what is happening with our film Gone Curling and with what has been a very successful and worthwhile Pledgeme fundraising campaign for a great New Zealand short film."

11 Nov 2012 – There was a surprise at yesterday's Welcome Reception for athletes at the 2012 Pacific-Asia Curling Championships.

Kate Caithness, President of the World Curling Federation, presented Liz Matthews, Member of the New Zealand Curling Association, with an IOC Women and Sport Achievement Diploma signed by Jacques Rogge.

The Diploma recognises Liz's outstanding contribution to promoting the development and participation of women and girls in sport.

The IOC Women and Sport Trophy is awarded annually to each of the five continents along with a Worldwide recipient. The New Zealand Curling Association was very proud to nominate Liz, who received the full support of the WCF.

Movember logo

16 Nov 2012 – Three of New Zealand's curlers at the Pacific-Asia Championships in Naseby will be billboards actively promoting men's health. Kenny Thomson, Phil Dowling and Scott Becker are sprouting moustaches in support of Movember.

Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in New Zealand and around the world. The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

West Coast curlers in Christchurch

2 Oct 2012 – A group of kilt-wearing, whiskey-swirling, broomstick-holding West Coasters invaded the ice rink in Hagley Park on Saturday.

The West Coast Curling Club, which has no ice to practice on at its base in Greymouth, drove over from the coast to practice and demonstrate the "gentlemen's game" of curling at IceFest...
